Since
1989, Dr. Thomas Hughes has made South Bend his home when he joined
CardioThoracic Surgery P.C. Since that time, he has been an attending
cardiothoracic surgeon at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Memorial
Hospital and Elkhart General Hospital. Previously, Dr. Hughes had
been an attending cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Dayton, Ohio from 1986-1989. His teaching experience
includes his appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery
at Wright State University Medical School and Instructor in Surgery
at the University of Illinois School of Medicine.
After
earning his undergraduate degree from the St. Louis University,
he continued on at St. Louis University School of Medicine to earn
his medical degree. Dr. Hughes went on to complete his internship
and residency in General Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical
Center. His residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery was completed at
the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr.
Hughes holds board certification with the National Board of Medical
Examiners, the American Board of Surgery and the American Board
of Thoracic Surgery and is licensed in the state of Indiana and
Texas. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a
member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Medical
Association and the Indiana Medical Society.
Special
clinical interests include mitral valve repair surgery, aortic valve
surgery, aortic vascular surgery and minimally invasive approaches
to cardiac surgery.
With
his wife, Eileen, and their three children, Dr. Hughes enjoys going
to the movies and the theater and outdoor sports including golf
and soccer.
